Peter Hook's The Light return to The Factory on 18 May 2011 for the first ever performance of Joy Division's starkly passionate, seminal second album, Closer live and in its entirety at the club's intimate downstairs gig floor, a year to the day since The Light first performed Unknown Pleasures at the venue. Back in September 2010, we hinted that the Unknown Pleasures performances might have been an "Opener" to set up these shows. And so it has turned out to be.
Closer is always remembered for being recorded whilst Ian Curtis's personal health was deteriorating and for being released in July 1980, two months after his death. Infamously, Peter Saville's classical cover design featured a Bernard Pierre Wolf photograph of the Appiani Tomb although it was chosen before Ian's had died.
Of course, Closer is also remembered for the quality and stark beauty of Martin Hannett's production and the tales of his unusual methods during the sessions are legendary. Add in the quality of the songs, increasing use of keyboards and sound effects and the almost all-pervading darkness of the overall vibe, you are left with one of the greatest albums of all time.
The Light's performance of Closer at The Factory is being recorded by Ronnie Lane's mobile recording studio for a vinyl only release later in 2011.
Once again, Peter Hook has chosen to play for the same charities as he supported at last year's Unknown Pleasures event, namely Mind and The Keith Bennett Appeal. Mind's Paul Farmer said "I am delighted that Peter Hook has decided to once again support Mind following the success of last year's gig which helped fund our work to improve the lives of people with mental distress, and to combat the stigma that still surrounds mental health problems. Our huge thanks goes to Peter and everyone else involved with the concert for their continued support."
